The valley of the mighty Arun Kosi runs north from the plain to the fringes of Makalu-Barun National Park, in the foothills of Makalu(8463m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. This broad and fertile valley forms the approach route for the trek to Makalu Base Camp and the end point for the culturally interesting exit trek from the Khumbu region to Tumlingtar.
